G-spot exists, say scientists
February 2008: Scientists claim to have found the first clear evidence that the fabled G-spot really exists - but only in some lucky women. Ultrasound scans found distinct physical differences between nine women who claimed to experience vaginal orgasms, and 11 who said they did not. In the first group, the body region reputed to house the G-spot was significantly thicker.

The finding ties in with the earlier discovery of biochemical markers relating to heightened sexual response in the same small patch of tissue, between the vagina and urethra. Stimulating the G-spot is said to trigger unusually intense orgasms in women but opinions are divided over whether this pathway to pleasure really exists.

A major problem is that no-one has found any solid physiological evidence for its existence. In contrast, the clitoris is self evident and easy (for some people) to locate. The new research from Italian expert Dr Emmanuele Jannini suggests that not every woman is blessed with a G-spot but a simple test may reveal if you possess one.

"For the first time it is possible to determine by a simple, rapid and inexpensive method if a woman has a G-spot or not," Dr Jannini told New Scientist magazine. In 2002 his team from the University of L'Aquila found biochemical markers related to sexual arousal in the G-spot spot. They included PDES, an enzyme that processes nitric oxide, the chemical that boosts blood flow and triggers male erections. However, the team was unable to link these markers to vaginal orgasms that occurred without simultaneous stimulation of the clitoris.

The new approach used an ultrasound scan to show that tissue in the space between the vagina and urethra - the "urethrovaginal space" - was thicker in women who said they had vaginal orgasms."Women without any visible evidence of a G-spot cannot have a vaginal orgasm," said Dr Jannini. Other experts question whether the G-spot exists as a separate structure or is the "hidden" part of the clitoris.

The Book of Love: In Search of the Kamasutra (book)
The original Kamasutra was written in northern India in the third century AD, when erotic culture lay at the heart of an exquisite civilization.

The Book of Love: In Search of the Kamasutra
is a book about this sensuous era, evoking the world of the pleasure-seeking men - and women - for whom the lover's guide was written.

Author James McConnachie shows that the Kamasutra was always much more than a sex manual: it was a passionate portrayal of an ideal lifestyle that was, even then, under threat from the moralists. McConnachie also demonstrates how Victorian explorer Richard Burton, with the help of a clandestine coterie of sexual experimenters and iconoclasts, then unleashed this extraordinary volume on English society in an attempt to start a revolution. And how the Kamasutra was driven underground into the hands of pornographers, before being thrust once more into the daylight, in the wake of the publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover.

The Book of Love: In Search of the Kamasutra tells the story of the life of a work, of how something as fragile as an idea and a way of seeing the world can be cradled between hard covers - and survive.
